Yemeni Government Announces Military Operation as Fighting Intensifies Around Taiz

Yemen’s internationally recognised government has announced the start of a new military campaign aimed at regaining territory from the Houthi movement, as fierce fighting continues around the strategic city of Taiz and other key areas of the country.

In a televised address on Sunday, Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi declared the launch of military operations intended to restore government control across Yemen.

“Today, I announce the start of military operations to retake the remaining territory of the republic and extend the authority of the state and its institutions across the entire national territory,” he said.

The announcement comes as military pressure increases on the Houthis, who have controlled the capital Sanaa for more than a decade. Recent attacks have targeted Houthi positions in Sanaa as well as the group’s traditional stronghold in Saada Province in northern Yemen.

Yemen’s civil war, which has been ongoing for more than a decade, has created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. Millions of Yemenis remain dependent on aid while repeated battles continue to damage infrastructure and disrupt access to food, healthcare, and essential services.

According to reports citing Yemeni military sources, Houthi forces have recently seized control of a key supply route connecting Taiz with Aden, the interim capital of the Yemeni government.

The route has served as a crucial logistical corridor for government-held territory, providing access for military supplies, commerce, and civilian movement between southern and central Yemen.

Military sources cited in media reports said the Houthis now control the area surrounding the road, effectively cutting off one of the government’s most important lines of communication and supply.

Analysts say the development could have major strategic consequences for government forces defending Taiz.

Farea Al-Muslimi, a research fellow at Chatham House, said the Houthis had achieved an important military objective.

“They’ve achieved the military objective of isolating Taiz from Aden, even if they haven’t fully taken control of it,” he said.

The reported encirclement of Taiz has heightened concerns about the humanitarian impact on civilians living in and around the city, which has experienced years of conflict, displacement, and economic hardship.

The latest developments suggest that both the government and Houthi forces are preparing for continued military confrontation, with control of Taiz and surrounding areas likely to remain central to the next stage of the conflict.
