Sam Altman Calls for Trust in AI Companies While Acknowledging Public Concerns

3 min read

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has urged the public to have confidence in artificial intelligence companies to develop advanced AI systems responsibly, while acknowledging that growing concerns about the technology are understandable.

Speaking at a technology conference hosted by Salesforce in San Francisco, Altman said AI developers recognize the significance of the technology they are creating and understand the responsibility that comes with it. He argued that companies working on advanced AI systems are committed to prioritizing safety and acting in the public interest.

At the same time, Altman acknowledged that public fears about artificial intelligence are justified, given the rapid pace of technological progress in recent years. He noted that as AI capabilities continue to advance, discussions about potential risks have become increasingly prominent.

His comments came amid heightened debate within the AI industry following warnings from several researchers and experts about the possible long-term risks of advanced AI systems. Recent public statements from former and current AI researchers have sparked widespread discussion about how powerful future AI models could become and whether existing safeguards are sufficient.

The debate has also fueled calls for stronger oversight of AI development. Some industry leaders and researchers have advocated for slowing the pace of development of the most advanced systems until additional safety measures, governance frameworks, and testing procedures are established.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently argued for a more cautious approach to frontier AI development and called for greater regulation of the sector. His position received support from several prominent figures in the AI industry, including Altman, DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, and technology entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Despite supporting discussions around safety and regulation, Altman said he remains confident that AI companies can manage the technology responsibly. He expressed the view that the industry is capable of maintaining safety and alignment measures ahead of increasing AI capabilities and said developers should slow down or pause development if necessary to address emerging risks.

The comments reflect a growing conversation within the technology sector about balancing innovation with safety. While supporters highlight AI’s potential benefits in areas such as healthcare, education, scientific research, and productivity, critics argue that stronger safeguards are needed to address risks related to misinformation, cybersecurity, ethics, and the broader societal impact of increasingly powerful AI systems.

As investment in artificial intelligence continues to accelerate worldwide, questions surrounding regulation, transparency, and responsible development remain at the center of global discussions about the future of the technology.
