Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain has called for a united nationwide movement against drugs, gambling, terrorism and other criminal activities, emphasizing that public participation is essential to building a safe and crime-free society.
Speaking as the chief guest at a views-exchange programme held at the Nawabganj Upazila Parishad conference hall, the minister said that eliminating crime cannot be achieved by law enforcement agencies alone. He stressed the need for citizens, local representatives and the administration to work together to create strong social resistance against criminal activities at every level of society.
Zahid warned that drug abuse remains one of the most serious threats facing the country, saying it has the potential to destroy families, derail the future of young people and weaken the nation as a whole. He urged the public to speak out against those involved in drug trafficking, substance abuse and gambling activities, whether conducted online or offline.
The minister emphasized that no village, union or ward should be allowed to become a center for drug dealing, gambling or other anti-social activities. According to him, preventing crimes before they occur is far more important than addressing them after the damage has already been done.
Highlighting the importance of collective action, Zahid said society must stand united against wrongdoers regardless of their social standing or influence. He noted that while criminals may wield power temporarily, truth and justice ultimately prevail. A united society, he added, can ensure that criminals have no place to thrive.
The minister also underscored the need to balance economic progress with moral and social development. He said that sustainable national advancement depends not only on economic growth but also on strengthening values, ethics and social responsibility.
Calling for greater efforts to protect the younger generation, Zahid urged communities to keep youth away from drugs, terrorism and criminal activities while encouraging their participation in education, cultural development and humanitarian values.
Referring to the vision of building a humane, modern and prosperous Bangladesh, the minister appealed for unity beyond political differences. He said that safeguarding the nation’s future and ensuring a better society for coming generations should remain a shared objective for all citizens.
