The Melbourne Royal Show has cancelled all poultry competitions and exhibitions for 2026, taking a decisive precaution as H5 bird flu cases continue to surge across Australia. The move follows a state government announcement that Phillip Island’s wild little penguin population will be vaccinated to protect against the fast‑spreading strain.
Melbourne Royal Show executive general manager Hannah von Bibra said the organisation had been in close consultation with Agriculture Victoria and the state’s chief veterinary officer, stressing that animal welfare remains the show’s top priority. “Melbourne Royal is taking this precautionary step to protect the health and wellbeing of the Victorian poultry community,” she said.
