Development on the highly anticipated sequel to 2023’s blockbuster “Barbie” has stalled, with studio executives struggling to secure deals with stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and filmmaker Greta Gerwig. The studio has until December to finalise agreements before rights revert to Mattel, putting the project’s timeline at risk.
According to The New York Times, Gosling’s asking price for the sequel is $20 million, adding to the complexity of negotiations. Talks have also been slowed by issues around creative control, a key sticking point for the talent involved.
The delay comes as Gosling recently signed on to his first superhero role in “Ghost Rider”, announced at Comic‑Con last week — a move that could further complicate scheduling for the “Barbie” sequel
Studio co‑chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca said they have made “a series of big offers” to secure the returning team but have not yet reached an agreement. “We have a rights deal with Mattel in place… unfortunately, we have been unable to reach an agreement thus far,” they said.
The holdup marks a significant setback for the studio, which had hoped to fast‑track a follow‑up to one of the most successful films of the decade.
