A truck driver has been charged over a dramatic crash involving a passenger train on one of Perth’s busiest rail lines, an incident that left several commuters injured and sent debris flying across Guildford’s town centre.
Police allege the 33‑year‑old Ballajura man drove a truck towing a dog trailer onto an activated railway crossing during peak hour in May. An oncoming train smashed into the trailer, ripping it from the vehicle and scattering metal fragments across the road and nearby cars. Officers said debris including a truck axle struck surrounding vehicles, while the train’s front carriage and the level crossing suffered extensive damage.
Passengers described being thrown to the floor as the train shuddered violently on impact, with some recalling the scene as “apocalyptic.” A family waiting at the crossing said they felt “lucky to be alive” after debris slammed into their SUV.
Police initially reported at least six people injured, including two toddlers, though none of the injuries were life‑threatening. The driver has now been charged with three counts of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm, one count of acts or omissions causing bodily harm or danger, and one count of driving with a prescribed illicit drug in his system.
The crash remains under investigation as authorities continue piecing together how a routine weekday commute turned into a chaotic emergency.
