Victorian motorists hoping to claim their long‑awaited 20 per cent vehicle registration rebate were met with frustration on Monday morning, as the Service Victoria app buckled under a surge of applications just hours after the scheme went live.
The rebate worth up to $186 per vehicle for the 2025-26 registration period is part of a $750 million cost‑of‑living package designed to ease financial pressure on households. But many drivers logging into the app were greeted with an error message reading: “Sorry. We are experiencing a few technical issues. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
It remains unclear whether the outage was caused by heavy traffic or a system glitch. Early figures suggest the platform was under immense strain, with 13,000 applications lodged by 10:15am and the system attempting to process 600 applications per minute, according to Nine.
The Victorian government has been contacted for comment.
The rebate applies to a wide range of privately registered vehicles, including cars, 4WD wagons, station wagons, motorcycles, utes, vans and light trucks. Eligible motorists must submit their claim before July 31, with the discount applying to registrations valid from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026.
The launch comes just one day after the state’s free public transport offer ended, adding to the rush of Victorians seeking relief wherever they can find it.
