Anthony Gordon Fulfils Childhood Dream as Barcelona Unveil €80m Signing With Fluent Spanish Surprise

Anthony Gordon’s boyhood fantasy of wearing Barcelona’s colours finally came true on Friday and the England winger stunned reporters by answering questions in fluent Spanish during his official unveiling.

Barcelona confirmed the 25‑year‑old’s arrival from Newcastle United on a five‑year contract, with British outlets reporting an €80 million fee plus add‑ons. For Gordon, the move marks the culmination of a dream he has carried since early childhood.

“I was excited to play for Barça since I was three years of age,” he said, switching seamlessly between English and Spanish. He revealed he had even studied the language in Newcastle because he always believed he would one day play for the Catalan giants. “I told my physio, ‘One day I’ll play for Barça, so I want to learn Spanish.’”

Gordon arrives after a standout season in which he scored 17 goals in all competitions, including 10 in 12 Champions League matches. Barcelona highlighted his attacking threat, noting he was Newcastle’s top scorer and the player who attempted the most dribbles last season. His performances against Barça in the Champions League also left a strong impression on the club’s hierarchy.

Newcastle, however, endured a disappointing Premier League campaign, finishing 12th and missing out on European qualification. Manager Eddie Howe had already hinted Gordon might have played his final game for the club amid interest from Bayern Munich but it was Barcelona who made the decisive move.

Gordon, part of England’s World Cup squad, said he is eager to link up with rising superstar Lamine Yamal and the rest of Barça’s elite attackers. “The more quality players you have around you, the better you’re going to be,” he said. “These players are at the very top level for a reason.”

The winger joins a growing list of English stars thriving abroad, including Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Ivan Toney. His international teammate Marcus Rashford also spent the season on loan at Barcelona, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists as the club retained their LaLiga title. Barça reportedly hold a €30m option to make Rashford’s move permanent before June 15.

Signed by Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for £45m, Gordon departs after 152 appearances, 39 goals, 28 assists, and a pivotal role in ending the club’s 70‑year trophy drought with last year’s League Cup triumph.

Now, he begins a new chapter one he has been preparing for since he first kicked a ball.
