Paraguay Stuns Germany in Dramatic Shootout to Reach World Cup Round of 16

2 min read

Paraguay delivered one of the shocks of the tournament on Monday, knocking four‑time world champions Germany out of the World Cup with a gripping 4-3 penalty shootout victory after the sides were locked at 1-1 through regular time in their Round of 32 clash.

Jose Canale sealed the upset with the decisive spot kick, capping a tense shootout in which Germany faltered badly. Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah all missed their penalties, leaving the European giants stunned and eliminated far earlier than expected.

Paraguay had struck first late in the opening half, when Julio Enciso rose to meet a Matias Galarza cross and powered home a header in the 42nd minute. Germany responded nine minutes into the second half, with Havertz glancing in a neat header from a Florian Wirtz delivery to level the match and set up a nervy finish.

With neither side able to break the deadlock, the contest moved to penalties and Paraguay held their nerve when it mattered most.

The South Americans now advance to the Round of 16, where they will face France or Sweden in Philadelphia on 4 July, carrying fresh momentum and belief after toppling one of football’s most decorated nations.
