Northern Territory Police are searching for a man who allegedly broke into the home of an elderly woman in Palmerston and raped her, prompting an urgent public appeal for information.

Police say the woman, aged in her 80s, was inside her Woodroffe residence on Wednesday night when an unknown man entered through the back door at around 8:50pm. According to investigators, the attacker fled immediately after the assault and has not yet been located.

Authorities have not released a description of the suspect, but detectives are treating the case as a top priority.

NT Attorney‑General Marie‑Clare Boothby condemned the attack during a press conference, saying she was “absolutely disgusted” by the crime.

“We need this person to be apprehended and dealt with because this kind of behaviour is not acceptable by our government,” she said.

Police are urging anyone with CCTV footage, dash‑cam recordings or information that may assist the investigation to contact them on 131 444, or to report anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
