Mirpur Erupts in Protest After Rape and Murder of Eight‑Year‑Old Ramisa Akter

2 min read

Residents of Mirpur took to the streets early Friday, blocking the busy Mirpur‑10 intersection as anger and grief boiled over following the rape and murder of eight‑year‑old Ramisa Akter. Demonstrators demanded the maximum punishment for the killer and a swift, uncompromising trial, chanting slogans such as “Justice for Ramisa” and “We want the death penalty.”

Traffic in the area came to a standstill as crowds gathered, many expressing frustration that such brutal crimes continue to occur due to delays and loopholes in the justice system. Protesters urged authorities to complete the investigation quickly and ensure exemplary punishment for the accused.

On Thursday night, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Ramisa’s family in Pallabi, assuring them that the case would be handled with urgency and full transparency.

Ramisa, a second‑grade student at Popular Model High School, was killed on 19 May inside a neighbouring flat in the same building where she lived. The main accused, Sohel Rana, 34, gave a confessional statement in court on 20 May, admitting that he sexually assaulted and murdered the child.

The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for systemic reforms to protect children and ensure faster justice in cases of sexual violence.
