Zelenskyy Secures Backing From UK, France and Germany for Direct Ceasefire Talks With Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has won the support of three of Europe’s most influential leaders in his push for direct ceasefire negotiations with Russia, according to a joint statement issued after high‑level defence talks in London.

Zelenskyy met with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at 10 Downing Street as Russia’s full‑scale war entered its fifth year. The leaders said they supported the proposal for direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, with active involvement from both the United States and European partners to help secure a ceasefire and pave the way for broader negotiations.

The Ukrainian president had publicly called for a face‑to‑face meeting with Vladimir Putin in an open letter last week. But the Kremlin quickly dismissed the idea, with Putin saying he saw “no point” in meeting Zelenskyy until a potential peace framework was already agreed.

Zelenskyy told Sky News that he had also met Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in Kyiv to deliver a message intended for Putin. “You are fighting against us on our territory,” he said. “We will not leave and we will not go out from our territory. No, we will not give you victory.”

Ukraine continues to urge its Western allies for more air‑defence ammunition as it faces relentless Russian strikes on cities and infrastructure.
