US woman Karen Read has filed a sweeping lawsuit against the Massachusetts State Police and the town of Canton, accusing both of misconduct, negligence and a deeply flawed investigation that led to her high‑profile prosecution in the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe.
Read, who was acquitted last June, lodged the complaint in Bristol County Superior Court on Thursday, arguing that her trial exposed “an embedded culture of bigotry, misogyny, systemic failures, and institutional rot” within the agencies responsible for the case. The lawsuit claims the town and police department failed in their hiring, training and supervision of officers, and seeks damages for legal fees, lost income, emotional distress and reputational harm.
The filing includes dozens of text messages, recordings and internal communications attributed to former state trooper Michael Proctor and former Canton police sergeant Sean Goode. Among the most disturbing allegations are messages in which Proctor referred to Read as a “whack job” and wrote that he hoped she would kill herself comments her legal team says reveal bias and misconduct at the heart of the investigation.
Read’s lawsuit argues that such behaviour tainted the inquiry from the outset, contributing to what she describes as a wrongful prosecution built on personal animus and institutional failure. The case is expected to reignite scrutiny of the investigation, which has already drawn national attention for its inconsistencies and internal conflicts.
