A major air and sea search is underway off the coast of Brisbane after a man in his 70s went missing overboard from a cruise ship late Friday night. Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the incident, saying the man was reported missing at around 2:00am.

In a statement, the company said the passenger had “apparently climbed over the safety railing and jumped overboard.” The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said it was notified that the man went overboard approximately 30 kilometres north‑east of Moreton Island.

AMSA has deployed a significant search effort, including Challenger jets from Cairns and Melbourne, five rescue helicopters, and six surface vessels sweeping the area. Authorities have not yet provided further details on the man’s identity or the circumstances leading up to the incident.

The search is expected to continue throughout the day as crews race against time in challenging offshore conditions.
