Molly O’Callaghan Cruises to 100m Free Win as Australia’s Stars Use Gold Coast Meet to Experiment

1 min read

Australia’s elite swimmers are treating this week’s Australian Open on the Gold Coast as a chance to test new strategies and none shone brighter on Monday night than Molly O’Callaghan.

The 22‑year‑old five‑time Olympic champion delivered a commanding performance in the women’s 100m freestyle, gliding to victory in 52.66 seconds, the only swimmer in the field to break the 53‑second barrier. She finished comfortably ahead of Meg Harris (53.36) and rising 19‑year‑old talent Olivia Wunsch (53.58).

For O’Callaghan, the result was less about the stopwatch and more about fine‑tuning ahead of a packed 2026 international calendar. The Dolphins will compete at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games (July 24-29) before heading straight to Irvine, California, for the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships (August 12-15).

With two major meets just weeks apart, Australia’s top swimmers are using the Gold Coast event to experiment with race plans, pacing and technique and O’Callaghan’s smooth, controlled win suggests she is right on track.
