Amanda Peet Opens Up About Cancer Diagnosis, Her Children’s Reactions and Finding Strength in Vulnerability

2 min read

Amanda Peet is earning widespread praise for her honesty after opening up about her breast cancer diagnosis, the emotional toll it took on her family, and the complicated path through illness, grief and recovery. In a recent essay and interviews, she spoke candidly about what it was like to break the news to her children and how she has been navigating the uncertainty that comes with a life‑altering diagnosis.

Speaking to E! News, Peet said she leaned heavily on friends and family in the early days. But telling her children Frances, 19, Molly, 15, and Henry, 11 required a moment of quiet courage. “They’ve been great,” she said, though she admitted there is never a perfect moment for that kind of conversation. “The hard part was realizing that nothing is certain and there was going to be no perfect time to tell them.”

In her essay for The New Yorker, Peet explained that her cancer is hormone‑receptor‑positive and HER2‑negative a less aggressive form that typically responds well to treatment. She underwent a lumpectomy followed by radiation, avoiding the need for a double mastectomy. Gratitude, she said, has become a constant companion, especially with her children close by, even if they keep her grounded in the most teenager‑like ways.

She joked about trying to show them Something’s Gotta Give, the beloved film she starred in only to be met with the kind of unimpressed reactions only one’s own kids can deliver. It’s moments like these, she said, that remind her life is still full of ordinary joys, even in the midst of recovery.

Peet’s openness has resonated deeply with readers, many of whom say her vulnerability has helped them feel less alone in their own health battles.
