Firefighters have rescued an unconscious woman from a burning home in Melbourne’s north after two younger residents were forced to smash a window to escape the flames. The blaze broke out on Correll Way in Roxburgh Park around 7:30am on Thursday, prompting a rapid emergency response.
Fire Rescue Victoria Commander David Woods said a smoke alarm jolted a man and woman both in their late teens or early 20s awake as the fire took hold.
“They tried to get out of the house but couldn’t,” he said. “They called Triple Zero from inside the house and in the meantime broke a front bedroom window and got out.”
But a third resident, a woman believed to be around 50, was still trapped inside. Fire crews entered the burning home and found her unconscious in a bedroom.
“Fire crew and ambulance crews then worked on the occupant for about 25 minutes and were able to get a pulse back,” Commander Woods said.
She was rushed to The Alfred Hospital in critical condition. The two younger residents were treated by paramedics, shaken but physically unharmed.
Commander Woods said the outcome could have been far worse without the working smoke alarm.
“The occupants that got out were very lucky that the smoke alarm was operating and woke them up,” he said.
