The Bangladesh Supreme Court’s Appellate Division is set to hear today the state’s appeal seeking to upgrade the sentences of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to the death penalty in the July-August genocide case.
The appeal is scheduled for hearing before the court’s regular full bench on Tuesday.
Earlier, the International Crimes Tribunal had sentenced both former leaders to death, along with life imprisonment on one additional charge, for crimes against humanity. The state argues that the life sentence is insufficient given the gravity of the offences and has submitted eight specific grounds to justify seeking the maximum punishment. The tribunal delivered its landmark verdict on 17 November last year.
Hasina and Kamal are currently absconding, and proceedings continue in their absence.
In the same case, former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun received a five‑year reduced sentence after cooperating as a state witness and providing evidence.
