The Cyber Security Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has launched an investigation into claims that the X (formerly Twitter) account of Jamaat‑e‑Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman was hacked, following the circulation of a post that triggered widespread condemnation.
DMP Joint Commissioner (Cyber Security and Support Centre) Syed Harun Or Rashid confirmed to the Daily Sun that the probe began on Sunday after a general diary was filed at Hatirjheel police station the previous day. He said the matter was being treated with “utmost importance” as authorities work to verify whether the account was genuinely compromised.
The controversy erupted after a post defaming working women appeared on the ameer’s verified X account, prompting strong reactions across social and political circles. Members of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) staged a protest in the capital on Sunday, condemning the offensive content.
Sirajul Islam, former president of Islami Chhatra Shibir and a member of Jamaat’s election management committee, lodged the GD on Saturday. He stated that the account was hacked around 4pm, and within half an hour, the defamatory message was uploaded. According to him, the party regained control of the account at approximately 5pm.
As the investigation continues, the incident has intensified scrutiny over digital security and political tensions ahead of the country’s electoral activities.
