BCB Opens Door for Shakib Al Hasan’s Return to National Team Despite Ongoing Legal Barriers

2 min read

Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan may soon return to the national side, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed he will be considered for selection in the next match provided he is available, fit and cleared to play. The update came from BCB Director Amzad Hussain following a board meeting on Saturday.

Hussain said the board unanimously agreed that Shakib would be eligible for selection in all upcoming home and away fixtures. The BCB also decided it will issue the necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to allow the all‑rounder to participate in international franchise leagues of his choice.

This was the third board meeting under newly appointed BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul. The board has already offered Shakib a place in the central contract and expanded the list of contracted players to 27.

Retirement Intentions and BCB’s Efforts to Bring Him Back

Shakib has reportedly expressed a desire to retire from international cricket after playing one final match on home soil. According to Hussain, the BCB has been in communication with him in recent weeks to facilitate his return to the national setup.

However, Shakib’s re-entry into Bangladesh remains complicated. President Aminul Islam is expected to consult senior government officials regarding the legal and security issues that have prevented Shakib from returning since the July–August 2024 uprising.

Legal Troubles and Political Backdrop

Shakib has not played for Bangladesh since the political upheaval that toppled the Awami League government, the party with which he was affiliated as a sitting lawmaker. He was abroad during the unrest and has since faced multiple corruption and murder cases linked to his political ties.

Following the uprising, authorities were unable to guarantee his safe return amid violent protests targeting him. The BCB maintains that it views Shakib “purely as a cricketer” and wants him back in the national team once legal matters are resolved.
