NSW Yet to Decide on Extending Public Assembly Ban, Officials Stress Safety First

1 min read

New South Wales authorities say no decision has been made on whether to extend the current ban on public assemblies, which can legally remain in place for up to three months after a terrorism related incident. A spokesperson for NSW Police confirmed that the commissioner is still considering the matter.

Acting Police and Counter Terrorism Minister Paul Scully said all decisions are guided by public safety. He noted that any adjustment to the Public Assembly Restriction Declaration will be reviewed by the Police Commissioner in the coming days.

Scully added that operational decisions of this kind rest with the NSW Police Force, which relies on intelligence, risk assessments and its on the ground understanding of community safety.
