2 min read

The incident that circulated on social media from Cox’s Bazar Airport was not a real emergency, but a staged scenario performed as part of a full‑scale security drill titled “Airport Security Exercise 2026”, organised by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).

The exercise took place on Wednesday afternoon (7 January) and tested multiple components of the airport’s security and emergency‑response systems.

CAAB Chairman: Drills Strengthen Coordination and Reveal Weaknesses

Speaking at the drill, CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Mostafa Mahmud Siddiq said such exercises are essential not only for identifying potential vulnerabilities but also for improving coordination among various agencies to ensure international‑standard passenger safety and service.

He recalled the 18 October fire at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, noting that the situation was brought under control quickly due to the combined efforts of all agencies involved.

According to him, the Cox’s Bazar exercise will play a significant role in preparing for the upcoming ICAO security audit.

Runway Expansion and New Terminal Underway

The CAAB chairman also stated that work is progressing rapidly to:

  • Extend the Cox’s Bazar Airport runway to 10,700 feet
  • Complete construction of a new international terminal

These upgrades will significantly enhance the airport’s capacity to handle international flights in the future.

Officials and Agencies Participated

Present at the drill were:

  • Air Commodore Abu Sayeed Mehboob Khan, CAAB Member (Operations & Planning)
  • Air Commodore Md Asif Iqbal, CAAB Member (Security)
  • Senior officials from CAAB
  • Representatives from various government agencies and law‑enforcement bodies

Journalists were also on site to observe the entire exercise.
