French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday that Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia should play a key role in overseeing Venezuela’s transition of power following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces.
Macron wrote on X that “the transition to come must be peaceful, democratic, and respectful of the will of the Venezuelan people.” He added that he hopes González Urrutia elected in 2024 will be able to guide the process “as quickly as possible.”
In a follow‑up message, Macron said he had also spoken with Venezuelan opposition figure and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado.
“I fully support her call for the release and protection of the political prisoners of Nicolás Maduro’s regime,” Macron wrote, adding that she like all Venezuelans can count on France’s support in advocating for a peaceful and democratic transition that respects the sovereign will of the people.
