Hundreds of tourists remain stranded near the site of a train collision close to Machu Picchu, with evacuation efforts slowed by the rugged terrain, according to local outlet Peru21.

At least 20 of the injured are in serious condition, a health official told Reuters.

The crash occurred on the railway line between Ollantaytambo Station and Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to the ancient Inca citadel. The journey between the two stations typically takes around 90 minutes. The trains involved were operated by PeruRail and Inca Rail.

“We deeply regret what has happened,” PeruRail said in a statement, adding that staff “immediately” provided first aid to the train driver, conductor, and passengers. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the collision.
