While thousands of partygoers spent Boxing Day recovering, council crews worked through the night to clear an enormous mess left behind after a spontaneous Christmas Day dance party at Coogee Beach.
The annual gathering, often called Orphans Christmas or Backpacker Christmas, transformed the beach reserve into a lively scene of DJ tents, Santa hats and red swimwear. Despite an estimated 15,000 people attending, police said the event remained peaceful with no arrests or fines.
Randwick City Council began the clean up around 7pm on Christmas night. By Friday morning, workers had removed more than four truckloads of rubbish, amounting to roughly 20 tonnes. Mayor Dylan Parker praised the efforts of rangers, lifeguards and cleaning crews, and thanked neighbouring Waverley Council for sending extra staff.
He said the council had prepared for a large turnout but did not anticipate such a sudden surge of people.
“They did trash the place but our staff have been working very hard through the day, evening and early morning to clean it up, and it looks fantastic at the moment,” he said.
