US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on rice imports from India and fertilizer from Canada, saying the move may be necessary to protect American farmers.
Speaking at the White House on Friday while announcing a $12 billion stimulus package for farmers, Trump stressed that the tariff policy was not designed solely for revenue but also to safeguard domestic products, agriculture, and industry.
“The new tariff policy was not created just to make money. Protecting our domestic goods, agriculture, and industry is also a key purpose,” Trump said.
He credited his administration’s expanded tariffs on various countries for enabling the farmer support package.
When reporters raised the issue of Indian companies dominating the US rice market, Trump responded:
“You’ve reminded me of a good point. We will look into this matter.”
The remarks signal potential escalation in trade measures targeting key agricultural imports, as Trump continues to prioritize US farmers’ interests amid global competition.
