Tensions have flared again along the Thailand–Cambodia border, ending a four-month period of calm. At least seven people have been killed in two days of fighting, including six Cambodian nationals and one Thai soldier, officials confirmed.
Rising Casualties
Cambodia’s Defense Ministry reported that on Monday night, two civilians were killed by Thai shelling in the border area, raising Cambodia’s death toll to six.
Prime Minister Hun Manet condemned the attacks on civilians, saying:
“Thailand is staging a drama of restoring sovereignty while attacking ordinary Cambodian villagers. This is unacceptable.”
Thai Military Response
On Tuesday morning, Thailand’s Navy stated that its forces chased Cambodian troops after detecting their presence in Trat Province’s coastal waters, forcing them to retreat.
Thai officials further alleged that Cambodian forces are:
Deploying heavy weapons and snipers along the border
Establishing fortified positions
Digging trenches on land near the frontier
