Soldiers in Benin declared on state television Sunday that they had removed President Patrice Talon from power in a military coup, saying the country is now under their full control.
The group, calling itself the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), claimed it had met and decided to strip Talon of his position as head of state.
Confusion Over Talon’s Status
Talon, who has ruled for 10 years and was expected to step down in April next year, has not been confirmed as detained. The French Embassy reported gunfire near Camp Guezo, close to the presidential residence, and urged French citizens in Benin to remain indoors for safety.
Conflicting Statements
The president’s office insisted Talon is safe and that the army is working to restore order. Officials told AFP that only a small group of soldiers had seized control of the television station, while the regular military was regaining command of the situation.
The developments have raised uncertainty in the West African nation, where tensions are high and international observers are closely monitoring events.
