The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has delivered a landmark judgment in Bangladesh’s history, sentencing deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death by hanging for crimes against humanity committed during the July–August 2024 massacre.

The tribunal also sentenced former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun to five years in prison. Al-Mamun admitted guilt and testified against the two senior leaders, serving as a prosecution witness.

This is the first case filed in the International Crimes Tribunal addressing killings and other crimes against humanity during the mass uprising. The verdict was announced today in Dhaka amid tight security measures around the tribunal and Supreme Court areas, with army, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) deployed to prevent unrest.

At approximately 12:40 pm, Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury began reading the first section of the 453-page judgment, divided into six chapters. The three-member judicial panel was chaired by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumder, with Justice Md. Shofiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Chowdhury as members. After a 2-hour and 10-minute summary reading, the tribunal formally announced the verdict at 2:50 pm, with the main ruling delivered by Justice Mozumder.

In addition to the death sentences, the tribunal ordered the confiscation of all assets belonging to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

The verdict has drawn massive international attention, with representatives from Reuters, AP, AFP, Al Jazeera, BBC World, and all major Bangladeshi outlets present at the tribunal. This marks the first time in Bangladesh’s history that a former Prime Minister has been sentenced in a crimes against humanity case, making today’s ruling a pivotal moment in the nation’s political and judicial landscape.
