A tragic traffic accident in the remote Aboriginal community of Doomadgee, located about 400 kilometres north of Mount Isa, has claimed the lives of a 30-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, while another passenger remains in intensive care.

Emergency services were called to Doomadgee Road at around 6:30am following reports that a vehicle had flipped and crashed. The driver, a 30-year-old woman from Cloncurry, was given first aid but died at the scene. The young girl was rushed to Doomadgee Hospital, where she was later declared deceased.

Two other passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were also taken to hospital, while a third passenger remains in a critical condition.

Police have declared a crime scene and confirmed that a 28-year-old man known to the deceased was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have urged the community to remain respectful as the process continues.

The Queensland Police Service is providing support to local officers and the Doomadgee community during this difficult time. In response to the tragedy, shops in the community have closed for Sorry Business, a cultural practice of mourning, and the Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council has expressed condolences to the families affected. The council has also advised residents to avoid the Doomadgee Road highway until further notice.

This devastating crash has deeply shaken the small community, highlighting both the fragility of life in remote regions and the importance of collective support in times of grief.
