Jamaat-e-Islami Warns of Unrest in Dhaka if Five-Point Demands Not Met by November 11

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has urged the interim government to accept the party’s five-point demand, warning that the capital Dhaka could face a “different scenario” on November 11 if the demands are ignored.

Speaking at a brief rally in front of the Matsya Bhaban in Dhaka on Thursday, November 6, Porwar reiterated the importance of the demands, which include holding a referendum before the upcoming national elections and implementing the July National Charter. He stressed that the interim government must act swiftly to avoid political escalation.

Earlier in the day, leaders from eight political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, submitted a memorandum to the Chief Adviser of the interim government outlining the demands. After handing over the memorandum, the alliance gathered at Matsya Bhaban to hold the short assembly, where Porwar once again emphasized the urgency of the five-point agenda.

Porwar’s remarks carried a clear warning: if the demands are not met, major political programs and demonstrations could unfold in Dhaka on November 11, potentially intensifying tensions ahead of the national parliamentary elections.

The five-point demand centers on:

  • Issuing an order to implement the July National Charter.
  • Holding a national referendum in November before the parliamentary polls.
  • Additional measures aimed at ensuring political reforms and fair representation.

The ultimatum reflects growing pressure on the interim government as opposition parties seek to shape the electoral process. With the parliamentary elections approaching, the possibility of large-scale demonstrations in Dhaka underscores the fragile political climate and the potential for unrest if consensus is not reached.
