Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that the country has begun developing a new generation of nuclear-powered cruise missiles capable of flying at least three times the speed of sound, with the potential to achieve hypersonic capability in the future.
Speaking at an awards ceremony in the Kremlin on Tuesday, Putin praised Russian scientists and engineers for their earlier successes in creating the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile and the Poseidon underwater drone torpedo. He described the Burevestnik project as a “historic achievement” that will secure Russia’s strategic balance and national defense for decades to come.
Putin revealed that the new missile system will be based on the same type of power units used in the Burevestnik and Poseidon projects. He added that this technology could open new opportunities not only in the defense sector but also in civilian applications.
The Russian leader also referred to the October 21 test of the Burevestnik missile, noting that a NATO warship was present near the testing site but that Russia did not interfere with its activities. He emphasized that Moscow poses no threat to other nations, insisting that Russia is simply modernizing its capabilities in line with other nuclear powers.
In addition, Putin confirmed that the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile system will undergo combat trials later this year and will be fully deployed in 2026.
The announcement underscores Russia’s continued push to advance its strategic weapons programs, signaling both technological ambition and a message of deterrence to rival powers.
