Vietnam has been struck by devastating floods after more than 1,000 millimeters of rain fell in just 24 hours the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the country’s central region. According to official figures, at least nine people have died and five others remain missing.
The national weather agency reported that heavy downpours are still continuing in UNESCO-recognized historic cities. By Monday night, the 24-hour rainfall total had reached the highest level in local history.
The torrential rains have submerged large parts of the historic tourist cities of Huế and Hội An. Disaster management authorities said more than 103,000 homes have been flooded, most of them in these two areas. Among the dead, six were residents of Da Nang and Hội An.
Images released by state media showed vast sections of Hội An underwater, with some houses submerged up to their rooftops. In Huế, 32 of the city’s 40 districts are flooded, with water depths ranging from one to two meters. Meanwhile, most reservoirs in Da Nang have already reached maximum capacity, and river levels continue to rise, raising fears of further flooding.
