Venezuela has declared Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar persona non grata, barring her from entering the country. The decision, confirmed in a vote by Venezuela’s National Assembly on Tuesday, comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations over US military activity in the Caribbean.
The move follows Persad-Bissessar’s public praise of recent US naval operations in the region. Legal experts have criticized those operations, saying the airstrikes violate international law and in some cases amount to extrajudicial killings. Reports indicate that 13 strikes on 14 vessels have left at least 57 people dead, though the identities of the victims have not been disclosed and no concrete evidence of drug trafficking has been presented.
Relations between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago have deteriorated further since the ban. According to AFP, the Trinidadian government is now planning a large-scale deportation of undocumented migrants, the majority of whom are Venezuelan nationals.
