Hilsa prices in Chandpur’s fish markets have surged sharply ahead of a 22-day government ban on fishing in the Padma and Meghna rivers to protect the species during its breeding season. The ban takes effect from midnight on Friday, October 3.
Although many fishermen had already stopped fishing, some continued until Thursday night and Friday morning, bringing their catch to Chandpur’s main fish market. Despite heavy demand from buyers, limited supply drove prices to unusually high levels.
On Friday morning, one-kilogram hilsa sold for Tk 2,500, while fish weighing over one kilogram fetched Tk 2,700. Hilsa weighing 700-800 grams sold for Tk 2,200, those between 500-600 grams for Tk 1,600, and smaller fish of 300-400 grams for Tk 700.
Market officials said only about 100 maunds of hilsa were supplied far below demand. As a result, many buyers left empty-handed. Sellers explained that the price hike was due to the last-minute rush and the sharp drop in supply before the ban.
