Emma Watson has stepped away from acting to focus on earning a doctorate at the University of Oxford, and she admits there is one part of the movie business she is glad to leave behind promoting her work.
The 35-year-old, best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, said her acting career was extraordinary but the promotional demands often overshadowed the creative process. “In some ways, I really won the lottery with acting, and what happened to me is so unusual. But a bigger component than the actual job itself is the promotion and selling of that piece of work, this piece of art. The balance of that can get quite thrown off,” she explained.
Watson said she misses performing on camera but found the marketing side “quite soul-destroying.” She added, “I do very much miss using my skill set, and I very much miss the art. I just found I got to do so little of the bit that I actually enjoyed.”
Having made her film debut at age 11, Watson has always relished the challenge of acting, even with limited rehearsal time on set.
