Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has reaffirmed that Bangladesh’s upcoming 13th parliamentary election, scheduled for February, will be conducted in a festive and peaceful atmosphere.
Speaking to reporters after the 14th meeting of the advisory council at the Home Ministry on Sunday, Chowdhury said authorities were working to ensure a smooth electoral process. “I can tell you that the next general election will be held in a festive and peaceful manner,” he said.
The adviser acknowledged that “one or two small incidents” are not unusual during elections but stressed that security agencies are taking steps to minimize disruptions.
Addressing concerns raised in media reports about uncertainty surrounding the polls, Chowdhury dismissed speculation, saying both the country and its media are independent. “So, you can speak freely which you didn’t prior to the July uprising,” he added, underscoring the government’s commitment to press freedom.
The assurance comes amid heightened political debate and public scrutiny as Bangladesh prepares for a crucial election year.
