Peru: Anti‑Government Protest in Lima Turns Violent

1 min read

Hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police in Lima on Saturday during an anti‑government rally organized by the youth group “Generation Z.” Protesters threw stones and sticks, while officers responded with tear gas.

Around 500 people gathered in the city center under heavy police presence, demanding action against corruption, organized crime, and a new pension reform. Several protesters accused Congress of lacking legitimacy, calling it “a wrecking force in the country.”

Local outlet Exitosa reported that one of its journalists and a cameraman were struck by pellets, while police confirmed three officers were injured.

The unrest comes as President Dina Boluarte’s approval ratings sink to record lows, with opinion polls showing widespread distrust of both her government and the conservative‑dominated Congress. Anger has intensified after lawmakers passed a law requiring young adults to join a private pension fund, despite widespread job insecurity.
