Deadly Train Sabotage in Russia’s Leningrad Region

1 min read

St. Petersburg:  Russian officials have reported two separate train derailments in the Leningrad region in what they are calling acts of sabotage, killing at least one train driver and injuring several others.

Governor Alexander Drozdenko said one derailment was caused by an explosion on the tracks. In a separate incident in the Oryol region on Saturday, three Russian National Guard troops were killed in another railway blast. A Ukrainian military source claimed responsibility for the Oryol attack but denied involvement in the Leningrad derailment.

The incidents have heightened security concerns as Russia holds regional elections in 21 of its 80 federal subjects. Authorities also reported “unprecedented” cyberattacks on the Central Election Commission’s systems during the vote, though officials insisted the integrity of the election was not compromised.

Railway infrastructure has been a frequent target during the war, with both sides accusing each other of sabotage aimed at disrupting troop movements and supply lines. The latest attacks come amid intensified fighting in eastern Ukraine and increased cross‑border drone strikes.
