A tornado was sighted in central New South Wales on Wednesday afternoon, prompting urgent weather alerts and warnings for residents in its path.
The dramatic weather event was first detected around 3:30pm, when fire tower cameras operated by the Rural Fire Service captured a powerful storm cell forming northwest of Young, near the locality of Tubbul. The images were quickly relayed to fire behaviour analysts and meteorologists, triggering a tornado warning for communities near Young and Cowra.
Authorities urged residents to stay indoors as the State Emergency Service issued a watch and act alert. While the tornado warning was later cancelled, forecasters warned that the threat was far from over, with the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall still looming.
NSW Rural Fire Service Inspector James Morris said early indications suggested the tornado was short-lived and not highly destructive. “At this stage, there are no reports of injuries or significant damage,” he said. “However, the storm cell is still moving through the area, and we will continue to monitor for any further calls for assistance.”
Emergency services remain on alert as the volatile weather system tracks across the region, with residents advised to remain cautious until conditions ease.
