Business owners in Perth’s north-east are calling for urgent state government assistance after a fire tore through the Morley Market, leaving every business in the complex damaged.
The blaze broke out on Wednesday morning, initially prompting suspicions of arson. However, investigators later determined the fire was not suspicious, revealing that CCTV footage had been misinterpreted what appeared to be a molotov cocktail was, in fact, the reflection of a car’s windscreen.
Around 70 firefighters worked for seven hours to bring the flames under control. The market, home to dozens of food and retail outlets many of them long-standing, family-run businesses has been left gutted.
In the aftermath, some store owners have launched online fundraising campaigns to help rebuild. A recovery hub has been established at Morley Library, offering information, support, and translation services for affected traders.
Mina Ehsan, owner of Bella Skin Clinic in the complex, said the advice provided at the hub was welcome but stressed that immediate financial aid was critical for businesses to survive the weeks ahead.
