Traffic on two of Bangladesh’s key highways came to a standstill on Friday afternoon as residents of Bhanga upazila in Faridpur staged a blockade protesting changes to parliamentary constituency boundaries.
The demonstration began at around 4:10 p.m. at the Bhanga roundabout, where locals blocked the entry points to both the Dhaka-Khulna and Dhaka-Barishal highways. The protest was sparked by a decision to remove Algi and Hamirdi unions from the Faridpur-4 constituency and include them in Faridpur-2.
The blockade brought long-haul buses, freight trucks, and other vehicles to a halt, leaving passengers stranded and causing severe congestion. Witnesses reported lines of stationary traffic stretching for kilometres in both directions.
Police from Bhanga Highway Station and the local thana were deployed to the scene in an effort to manage the situation. Officers said they were working to restore normal traffic flow but that protesters had yet to clear the roads.
Participants in the protest vowed to continue their movement until the boundary change is reversed, warning that further action could follow if their demands are not met.
