Pakistan Railways has announced an ambitious plan to launch a high-speed bullet train between Karachi and Lahore by 2030, signaling a transformative leap in the country’s transport infrastructure. The train, expected to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h, will slash travel time between the two major cities from 20 hours to just 5.
This 1,215-kilometer route is part of the ML-1 (Main Line-1) modernization project, a $6.7 billion initiative under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The China Railway Construction Corporation is expected to play a key role in its implementation.
Key stops along the new line will include Hyderabad, Multan, and Sahiwal. The project promises dual tracks, modern bridges, and advanced signaling systems to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for passengers.
Beyond passenger travel, the bullet train is set to revolutionize freight transport. By 2030, rail cargo volume is projected to rise from 4% to 20%, reducing reliance on costly road transport and potentially saving billions in fuel imports.
