Shakib’s T20 Masterclass: A Record No One Has Touched

2 min read

Shakib Al Hasan has etched his name into cricketing history with a feat no player has ever achieved in the shortest format of the game. The Bangladeshi all-rounder became the first cricketer to score over 7,000 runs and take more than 500 wickets in T20 cricket, setting a new benchmark for excellence and longevity.

The milestone came during a Caribbean Premier League 2025 match, where Shakib represented the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Entering the game just one wicket shy of the 500 mark, he dismissed Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan in the 15th over with a sharp return catch. He went on to claim two more scalps in the next over, finishing with figures of 3 for 11 and lifting his career tally to 502 wickets.

With the bat, Shakib added a brisk 25 off 18 balls, helping his team chase down the target with two balls to spare. His all-round brilliance earned him the Player of the Match award and further solidified his reputation as one of the most complete players in T20 history.

Shakib’s numbers speak volumes. He has played 457 T20 matches, scored 7,574 runs at an average of 21.03, and taken 502 wickets at 21.43 with an economy rate of 6.78. He holds 33 fifties, 12 four-wicket hauls, and five five-wicket hauls. No other player has combined such prolific batting and bowling in the format.

Among bowlers with 500 or more T20 wickets, Shakib leads in runs scored. His closest rival, Dwayne Bravo, retired with 6,970 runs and 631 wickets. Andre Russell is inching closer with 9,361 runs and 487 wickets, but Shakib remains the only one to cross both thresholds.

In T20 internationals, Shakib retired after the 2024 World Cup with 2,551 runs and 149 wickets in 129 matches. He remains the only player to have scored over 2,500 runs and taken more than 100 wickets in T20Is.
