A senior United Nations official issued a grave warning on Sunday, urging governments worldwide to pressure Israel to halt what he described as a “carnage” in Gaza. The High Commissioner for Human Rights emphasized that failure to act could be seen as complicity in international crimes.
In a video statement from Geneva, he called for “immediate steps” for Israel to end its ongoing presence in the occupied Palestinian territory. He also urged all parties involved to pursue meaningful progress toward establishing a two-state solution.
The upcoming High-Level Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, is described as both urgent and historic. Its goal is to foster dialogue on ending the conflict and implementing a two-state solution.
Meanwhile, the UN’s humanitarian chief painted a bleak picture of Gaza’s worsening crisis. Widespread hunger, deteriorating health among children, and dangerous efforts to access food have become daily realities.
While Israel has recently eased some restrictions and increased aid deliveries, the humanitarian leader stressed that these measures are far from sufficient. He called for a large-scale, sustained humanitarian response, including safe access routes, continuous fuel supplies, and civilian protection. He emphasized that a permanent ceasefire is essential to prevent further catastrophe.
