Nationwide Protest Planned in Bangladesh After Attack on NCP Rally

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has announced a nationwide blockade across Bangladesh in response to an attack on the National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj. The organization’s President, Rashidul Islam Rifat, shared the announcement via Facebook on Wednesday.

In his post, Rifat stated, “In protest of the attack on the July Movement leaders in Gopalganj, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement is declaring a blockade programme at important points throughout Bangladesh. All units of the movement across the country are urged to organise the blockade in coordination with local student organisations, political parties, and the wider student community.”

Earlier the same day, leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its student wing, Chhatra League, attacked the NCP motorcade following a rally. The incident occurred around 2:45 PM near the launch terminal area of Gopalganj town as the central NCP leaders were returning from the rally.

Aggressors blocked the road and threw bricks and stones at the convoy, vandalizing several vehicles. When police attempted to intervene, clashes erupted between the two groups. To control the situation, police and army personnel used rubber bullets and tear gas shells. Amid the chaos, NCP leaders retreated under police and army protection.
