Spanish police have detained eight individuals in connection with violent clashes that erupted over the weekend in the southeastern town of Torre-Pacheco, in the Murcia region. The incidents involved far-right groups, local residents, and migrants and occurred after an elderly resident was beaten earlier in the week.
The clashes took place on Saturday night following the assault on the elderly man, whose attackers remain unidentified. The far-right groups in the area had called for retribution against the local migrant community, which makes up a significant portion of the town’s population.
Among those detained are two people allegedly linked to the initial attack on the elderly man, along with several others involved in the weekend violence, according to Mariola Guevara, the central government’s representative in Murcia, who announced the arrests on X (formerly Twitter).
Guevara stated that six Spaniards and one North African resident were detained for assault, damage, and disturbances. The two additional detainees had assisted in the attack on the elderly man, she added.
A substantial police presence was deployed in Torre-Pacheco, a town with approximately 42,000 residents, about a third of whom are of foreign origin. The surrounding region also hosts many migrant workers employed as day laborers in agriculture, a key sector driving the local economy.
