A road safety expert has urged Western Australia to lower all urban speed limits to 30 kilometers per hour, asserting it is the most effective way to protect vulnerable road users.
While often sparking debate among the public, several local governments across Perth and regional areas have already adopted the reduced limit in busy zones such as shopping precincts and café strips.
Paul Roberts, deputy director of the Western Australian Centre for Road Safety Research, emphasized that lowering speed limits is essential for safety.
“In areas with high pedestrian activity or where cars and vulnerable road users share space, we must have lower speed limits,” Roberts said. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a metropolitan or regional area. Geraldton, Bunbury, and Subiaco have already taken this step.”
Subiaco Mayor David McMullen highlighted the positive impact of the change.
“Reducing the speed limit on Rokeby Road to 30 kilometers per hour in 2021 has led to nearly a 50 percent decrease in reported accidents,” he explained.
The City of Subiaco is among five inner-city councils planning to extend 40-kilometer-per-hour residential zones, alongside the cities of Perth, South Perth, Vincent, and Victoria Park. These local governments form the Perth Inner City Group, working toward safer urban streets.
