Starting in July, tenants in Queensland’s public housing who receive three warnings for serious behaviour within a year could be evicted under a new government policy. Those evicted for illegal offences will also face a two-year ban from reapplying for social housing.
Housing Minister Sam O’Connor explained that the policy aims to give housing officers the authority to record warnings and take action if problematic behaviour continues. “Our goal is to ensure the safety of all tenants and protect the majority who do the right thing in their homes and communities,” he said.
The new rules will allow officers to exercise discretion for tenants with complex needs, including disabilities, mental health issues, or experiences of domestic violence. Severe or illegal activities such as assault, drug manufacturing, or dangerous conduct will lead to immediate eviction and a two-year ban.
For ongoing serious behaviour, such as deliberate damage or aggressive language, tenants will face eviction after their third breach within a year. They will also be barred from accessing public housing for 12 months.
