The Flying Fruit Fly Circus, based in Albury, is set to extend its reach into Melbourne, offering more opportunities for performers across the country. Following a competitive tender process announced late last year, the circus has secured the primary tenancy of a Victorian government-owned creative space at Collingwood Yards.
Scheduled to open in October, the venue will be renamed Circus Centre Melbourne. It will feature two spacious performance areas along with several versatile rooms designed for rehearsals and shows. Circus Oz is also a tenant at the site, and new lease arrangements will see it occupy a smaller footprint.
A recruitment drive for Melbourne-based staff is currently underway as the centre prepares to welcome performers and artists from across the nation.
Albury-based circus performer Clancy Rosewarne, who joined the Flying Fruit Fly Circus at age three, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion. “This move will give more young people the chance to learn physical theatre skills,” he said. “Being in Melbourne means more space and more opportunities to connect with others.”
Chief Executive Richard Hull highlighted the significance of the new centre, stating, “This has been a rigorous public tender process, and I am grateful to the Victorian government for trusting Flying Fruit Fly Circus to re-imagine this stunning venue.” Hull also emphasized the centre’s plans to collaborate with various bodies within the circus and theatre sectors to bring the vision for the space to life.
